Bio
Katia Sepúlveda (Santiago de Chile 1978) began attending workshops led by Chilean artists at the age of 15. Between 1996 and 2000 she studied photography at the ARCOS Institute of Arts and Communication in Santiago de Chile, followed by a postgraduate course in film directing at the University of Chile. In order to further improve her graphic printing techniques, she took classes at the "Taller 99" and became a free artist there.
Receiving a DAAD arts scholarship, she moved to Germany in 2004 to study at the Academy of Arts and Media Cologne (KHM), where she attended classes by VALIE EXPORT, Jürgen Klauke, Matthias Müller, Julia Scher. The framework of her work deals with critical and decolonial feminisms. In 2006, she began her MA studies at the School of Arts and Media in Cologne, Germany, with the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung scholarship, where she completed her studies at the beginning of 2009. She is currently a PhD candidate in critical theory at the 17, Instituto de Estudios Críticos, in Mexico City.
She has been a selected artist in the 32nd Sao Paulo Biennial (2016) and her work has been exhibited at MASP in the exhibition "Historias Feministas" in Sao Paulo (2019), at the International Women's Film Fest Dortmund+Cologne Germany (2023), Bienal Sur (2019), Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende (2017), and a retrospective exhibition "Ecuaciones de género" at the Museo sin Muros del Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Santiago de Chile and Concepción (2013). She has exhibited in other countries in Latin America and Europe.It is in collection at the state gallery Gabriela Mistral in Santiago de Chile and in personal collection of Paul B. Preciado's personal collection.Has written an article with Sayak Valencia "Del fascinante fascismo a la fascinante violencia" (2016), in 2018 was published a catalogue of the exhibition Giropanfronterizo Galeria Gabriela Mistral, Santiago de Chile. She has participated in the art residency Summer Camp Curatoria forence, Villa Alegre Chile (2013).
At the same time she has worked as Curandera/Curator of the research and exhibition project "El futuro ya fue: Anti-futurismo cimarrón" which brought together 16 individual artists and racialised and migrant collectives from Abya Yala, at La Virreina Centro de la Imagen/ Arts Santa Mónica, Barcelona. She is currently curating the second phase of the Anti-Futurista Cimarrón project based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Katia Sepúlveda lives and works in Cologne, Germany.
Katia Sepúlveda (Santiago de Chile 1978) comenzó a asistir a talleres dirigidos por artistas chilenos a los 15 años. Entre 1996 y 2000 estudió fotografía en el Instituto ARCOS de Artes y Comunicación en Santiago de Chile, seguido de un curso de postgrado en dirección cinematográfica en la Universidad de Chile. Con el fin de mejorar aún más sus técnicas de impresión gráfica, tomó clases en el "Taller 99" llegando a ser artista libre del mismo.
Al recibir una beca de artes DAAD, se mudó a Alemania en el 2004 para estudiar en la Academia de Artes y medios de Colonia (KHM), donde asistió a las clases de VALIE EXPORT, Jürgen Klauke, Matthias Müller, Julia Scher. El marco de sus trabajos aborda los feminismos críticos y descoloniales. En el 2006 comenzó su maestría en la escuela de artes y medios de Colonia Alemania con la beca Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, en donde terminó sus estudios a principios de 2009. En la actualidad es candidata a doctora en teoría crítica en el 17, Instituto de Estudios Críticos, en la Ciudad de México.
Ha sido artista Seleccionada en la 32nd bienal de Sao Paulo (2016) y su obra se ha expuesto en MASP en la exposición “Historias Feministas” de Sao Paulo (2019), en el International Women's Film Fest Dortmund+Cologne Germany (2023), Bienal Sur (2019), Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende (2017), y una muestra retrospectiva “Ecuaciones de género” en el Museo sin Muros del Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Santiago de Chile y Concepción (2013). Ha expuesto en otros países a nivel Latinoamericano y Europeo. Está en colección en la galería estatal Gabriela Mistral en Santiago de Chile y en colección personal de Paul B. Preciado. Ha escrito un artículo con Sayak Valencia “ Del fascinante fascismo a la fascinante violencia” (2016), en el 2018 se publicó un catálogo de la exposición Giropanfronterizo Galería Gabriela Mistral, Santiago de Chile. Ha participado de la residencia de arte Summer Camp Curatoría forense,Villa Alegre Chile ( 2013).
Al mismo tiempo a trabajado como Curandera/Curadora del Proyecto investigativo y expositivo “El futuro ya fue: Anti-futurismo cimarrón” que aglutino 16 artistas individuales y colectivos racializados y migrantes de Abya Yala, en La Virreina Centro de la Imagen/ Arts Santa Mónica, Barcelona. Actualmente es curandera de la segunda fase del proyecto Anti-Futurista Cimarrón con sede en San Juan de Puerto Rico. Katia Sepúlveda vive y trabaja en Colonia Alemania.
